Recognising the need to be fit for operating in the 21st Century, the department had embarked on a huge change journey: moving to three directorates and focusing on a central hub with fewer, larger regional spokes. The department commissioned an organisation-wide engagement piece to redesign their values. They launched a 5-year campaign to embed these values in all the staff. Q5 where asked to support with two elements:
Creating a ‘toolkit’ of culture resources for use by managers with their teams; and
Developing a series of events for 100 Influential Leaders to equip them to embed the values in their teams
Our Approach
We worked in close partnership with the culture & Engagement team to design, test and refine the approaches.
In developing the toolkit, we used three key principles to guide our work: keeping it simple, co-creating it with the team, and working on ways to make it stick.
The Influential Leaders events were both experiential and personal(creating a space to evaluate their own behaviour and ways of working) and applied and supported(integrating practical tools and support with real business challenges). We piloted these events with a cohort of Regional Change Managers prior to refining them for wider roll out.
Key Outcomes
The toolkit was launched including 3 elements: Team ABC, values workouts and Delving Deeper.
Team ABC - 3 simple team activities that bring the values to life, focusing on Awareness, Behaviour and Commitment
Values workouts for each of the 4 values - structured around a Watch-Discuss-Do approach
Delving Deeper - recommended reading/watching and further support tools/tips for those that are keen to explore further
Following the successful pilot of The Influential Leaders, the approach and content were refined for rolling-out with three further groups across the UK. We also prepared members of the client team to facilitate future events themselves.
