The Challenge

World Rugby is the international federation for rugby union and the owner of the sport’s pinnacle events of World Cups and Sevens Series. Its mission is to grow the game by delivering a Global Sport for All – True to its Values. The organisation is going through a period of unprecedented transformation as it attempts to capitalise on the massive growth opportunities in new markets with new audiences, and help its unions and regions emerge from the pandemic on sound financial foundations while ensuring the game is delivered with quality, integrity and is safe for all of its participants.

Throughout this massive period of growth, Q5 has advised World Rugby’s CEO and senior leadership team on how best to transform its organisation over an 18-month period.

Our Approach

  • Q5 conducted an end-to-end organisation effectiveness review via interviews with executive and non-executive directors, interactive surveys and focus groups, identifying organisational strengths and a prioritised set of pain points, relative to other relevant comparator organisations.
  • We then worked with the CEO and a small design group to develop target operating model, structure and governance recommendations.
  • This led to design workstreams with each senior leadership team member to carry out detailed design for their respective teams and headcounts.
  • We supported the internal HR team to develop an appropriate implementation plan, taking in to account other change initiatives running in parallel.

Key Outcomes

  • A new operating model with greater focus on the strategic objectives of the organisation.
  • More targeted decision making process so the right expertise is having a say on the right things.
  • A whole organisation redesign, impacting all departments and roles, including a route to grow key capability gaps sustainably.
  • A solution owned by an empowered senior leadership team to lead the change in their teams.
