The Challenge

Q5 were asked to support a Local Health Board (LHB) in Wales with their journey towards becoming a high performing organisation through investing in developing the capability of approximately 1,800 of their leaders and managers. Through enhancing leadership capability across the clinical and corporate components of the organisation, the LHB hopes to empower leaders to lead the change needed to transform the organisation and deliver for the communities it serves.

Our Approach

We are working collaboratively with the LHB’s organisation development and learning & development teams to complete:

  1. An initial cultural assessment
  2. Design and delivery of a leadership programme for developing clinical and corporate leaders
  3. Design and delivery of a leadership programme for senior clinical and corporate leaders

In doing so, we are:

  • Hosting a series of workshops with the LHB OD and L&D teams to co-design the programme and agree design principles, structure, learning objectives, approach and material
  • Engaging with the wider organisation’s staff networks, professional groups, senior leaders and staff at all levels, to understand what they are looking for from the leadership programmes, and explore what areas leaders and managers would like to develop in
  • Ensuring compatibility with the in-house learning management system, so that all materials, look and feel consistent with existing programmes while taking advantage of the platform’s versatility

Key Outcomes

  • Completed an initial cultural review and identified relevant themes for informing programme design
  • Identified key skills and capabilities to be addressed in programme design and delivery which contribute towards behaviour change in the organisation
  • Provided a safe space for staff at all levels to share their views on leadership within the LHB, collecting a wide range of views and feedback that will aid the development of the programme structure and content
  • Started to encourage and enable staff to create connections, build their professional network and share experiences, which is helping to start break down organisational boundaries
  • Revealed a desire for change and appetite from leaders to participate in the new programmes when they are launched
