The Challenge

Alfred Health, a tertiary hospital with >12,000 staff, wanted to increase the number of digitally-enabled health services it offered and place their patients and employees at the centre of future design. Facing significant operational pressures, they had limited capacity and capability to bring their strategy to life and asked Q5 to provide analytical support to their 3Rs programme, providing a quantitative basis to support the design and development of business cases.

Our Approach

Q5 provided central analytics support across the programme, supporting individual projects to better understand the challenge, size the opportunity, support design decisions and develop business cases for submission to the Department of Health, Victoria.

Some of the analysis we conducted:

  • Benchmarking performance and operations of the Surgical Program, identifying opportunities to increase patient numbers, reduce waiting times, increase patient safety and reduce average length of stay.
  • Analysed the size of opportunity of virtual care, with detailed analysis of all patients to determine suitability for virtual care and prioritisation of patient groups and initiatives. We found ~30% of patients could be treated at home or in the community with the right support in place.
  • Quantified the benefits for multiple new outpatient services that would reduce wait times, deliver better patient outcomes, and clear a growing patient backlog by increasing discharge rates.
  • Sized the opportunity for the establishment of a Command Centre, identifying the benefits to patients, operations and reducing the level of pressure on front-line staff.

Key Outcomes

  • Created confidence within the Alfred Health Executive Team on the benefits of the proposed initiatives and provided increased clarity on the benefits and costs.
  • Identified significant opportunities to improve patient outcomes, safety, operational efficiency, and reduce growing patient backlogs.
  • All developed and submitted business cases were funded by the Department of Health, Victoria.
  • Allowed for the disqualification of non-viable initiatives, ensuring focus and resources were directed to the most beneficial initiatives.
