The Challenge

NHS Digital are the national transformation and technology partner to the UK health and social care system. Working at pace, NHS Digital wished to respond to shifting skills & capability demands upon them by significantly reshaping & uplifting the skills required for a number of core roles across the organisations in advance of a significant organisational restructure.

Following our initial work on reshaping & uplifting the skills required across a number of roles, Q5 were asked to support with a cross-organizational piece of design to fundamentally redesign the shape and capability of the organisation.

Our Approach

Collaborating with senior NHSD stakeholders we achieved the following:

  • A significant data cleanse activity to quantify the number of in-scope roles and subsequent job descriptions
  • A comprehensive and central process for co-ordinating job description rewrite & sign-off of new job descriptions
  • Developed, over a 9-week period, a comprehensive high-level design for each ‘Directorate’, including vision, purpose, design principles, operating model and critical structures and roles
  • Proactively identified and facilitated the resolution of critical cross-cutting organisational issues and pain points
  • Worked with a broad range of stakeholders and third parties to develop and iterate the case for change and ensure momentum was maintained.

Key Outcomes

  • Developed a revised set of critical job descriptions for roles that were either entirely new or had significantly changed, demonstrating a clear articulation of what had changed
  • Provided a clear, robust & replicable process for all future required job descriptions
  • Delivered comprehensive high-level design across all Directorates, outlining a clear future vision & organisation design for NHS Digital

What our clients say about us

“Q5 are fantastic. They really embedded themselves across the organisation to help us to work at pace to complete a top-to-bottom detailed design within tight timescales. Their experience and depth of knowledge in organisation design and change, combined with a pragmatic hands-on approach, makes them a joy to work with. They’re a true partner, demonstrating agility and adaptability in working with the organisation in challenging circumstances. I’d highly recommend them to any organisation, digital or otherwise, grappling with complex change.”
