The Challenge

Bridging Barriers is a social mobility charity supporting young people aged 16-25 from underrepresented and low socioeconomic backgrounds to access employment opportunities through mentoring, networking, and skills development​. Bridging Barriers faced significant challenges related to scaling its impact. These included a lack of funding, insufficient internal systems to manage rapid growth, and no written strategy or business plan, resulting in rushed operations and difficulties in prioritising tasks. Additionally, the small team struggles with capacity issues, and limited infrastructure affects their ability to effectively meet the high demand for its programs​.

Our Approach

  • Reassessed the organisation’s mission and strategic priorities, aligning them with long-term goals to address scaling challenges​.
  • Conducted a value chain analysis to map and categorise core activities, identifying areas to stop, start, continue, or change to optimise operations​.
  • Developed tools such as the hourglass framework to focus on critical activities and deprioritise non-essential tasks for effective resource allocation​.
  • Outlined a high-level business plan, including prioritised activities, objectives, measures of success, and required resources to support implementation over the next 12 months​.
  • Recommended improvements to governance, financial systems, and the introduction of project management tools to streamline internal processes​.
