The Challenge

The client needed to accelerate its transformation into a provider of net-zero emissions energy products and services. This included redesigning the organisation to line up against the new product and value streams, to enable growth in target sectors and to take out unwanted complexity and cost.

Having previously developed the client’s enterprise organisation design methodology, Q5 was well placed to help two critical areas of the business – the renewables business and trading and supply – to align and respond to the new agenda.

We worked intensively and extensively with the trading and supply business to interpret, design and implement their operating model, while also supporting many of the critical workstreams (and PMO) of a major programme to develop and reassess all aspects of risk management as they shifted from a compliance-led to controls-enabled model.

Our Approach

Organisation design and implementation:  We used our Metro Map methodology to support our client across a twelve month period from high level design through to implementation and go-live of its operations functions. This included:

  1. Validation of the original high-design including activity mapping
  2. Detailed design of the organisation ensuring the overall objectives of a simpler, leaner organisation were met and that the operating model worked
  3. Preparation for and Business Readiness management of the implementation of the new design

Risk transformation programme: We helped our Executive sponsor to shape the programme and change management approach. We then provided ongoing support across and within the ten complex risk management programmes. This included:

  1. Provision of the change management approach and embedded change managers
  2. Delivery of an improved, more agile programme governance and prioritisation mechanism
  3. Initiation and management of an internal change practitioner toolkit and Network

Key Outcomes

  • A detailed organisation design for Trading and Supply Operations ready for implementation
  • A simpler, leaner organisation ready to take full advantage of the Energy Transition (aligned to FTE and cost reduction targets)
  • Teams across Trading and Supply have a greater awareness of their risks and associated accountabilities, processes and required ways of working
  • Change management expertise embedded into the implementation to strengthen the interface and coherence between the programme and business acceptance/requirements
  • A revamped change methodology that can be used by individuals in Trading and Supply to delivery changes themselves without the need for significant external support
  • A comprehensive business readiness management process to stress-test the new organisation design against key operational risks and processes.
