The Challenge

Tideway is the organisation at the heart of a major new sewer in London. CEO Andy Mitchell had a vision for how to deliver the tunnel while working within a complex contractual partnership – “the Tideway”.  Q5 were invited to help develop this mindset in leaders, to unlock high performance through clarity of purpose, empowered delegation of decision-making, and removing blockers to collaboration.

Our Approach

  • We designed a 12-month programme of organisation and people development, specifically targeted to enable the CEO’s vision.
  • We kicked off with a company-wide event – Tideway Day – involving all 450 employees.
  • We spent time with the Executive and Senior Leadership Teams to define key principles and ways of working.
  • We developed a programme of core learning modules supported by masterclasses in enabling skills.
  • We deployed Action Learning sets to bring cross-divisional teams together to work on real business problems.
  • We trained further colleagues to act as peer coaches.

Key Outcomes

  • The programme helped teams to develop key skills such as facilitation, negotiation, empowerment and conflict management – which were critical to achieving the ways of working on this major project.
