The Challenge

In a changing Higher Education world – following the global pandemic, with increasing constraints on funding, and a shifting competitive landscape – the University of Surrey was on a journey to refresh its strategy to being a leading global university.

To make this happen, they recognised the part for leaders to play in role modelling the values, nurturing an inclusive culture, developing high-performing teams, thinking strategically, leading the change agenda and driving results. So Q5 were invited to co-design and delivery the Surrey Senior Leadership Programme for 90 leaders across Academic and Professional Services departments, to equip and enable them to fulfil this role.

Our Approach

  • In our Discovery stage we met 1-1 with a number of the Executive Board to understand their strategic ambitions and challenges; and we ran focus groups with colleagues at a range of levels to understand what they required from leadership. This helped give a balanced picture of the role for leaders, as well as create trust with those about to take part in the programme.
  • The emerging learning objectives were therefore “exactly what we need”, and robust set of design principles help us make key decisions such as forming the cohorts, defining the action learning projects, level of participant, level of ‘challenge’.
  • The programme consisted of 3 one-day modules delivered around 4 weeks apart. Between modules, participants met in their coaching trios, and worked on individual projects.

Key Outcomes

  • Participants describe feeling more confident, creating trust, better delegation, decisiveness, inclusiveness, and courage in dealing with issues.
  • The HR and Executive sponsors are delighted with the outcomes and committed to maintaining the momentum it has stimulated, taking steps to coordinate Projects and further build the culture at the University.

What our clients say about us

One of the most impressive leadership programmes I've ever been on, highly experiential, lovely to work with such a diverse and impressive group of leaders and facilitators and incredibly helpful in addressing leadership challenges at Surrey.
