The Challenge

Metcash is Australia’s leading wholesale and distribution company, that provides merchandising, operational, and marketing support to independent retailers across food, liquor, and hardware. Q5 had recently been engaged to support the Supermarkets business to form their 5-year strategy in response to declining sales and changing market dynamics. To execute the strategy, the business needed to transform how it operated and Q5 were kept on to support with the detailed design of the operating model and to plan how to implement it.

Our Approach

The key principle for our approach was that the programme was business-led, coached and facilitated by Q5:

  • We partnered closely with the HR business partner and her team, coaching them to lead their senior leaders through detailed design
  • We organised a working group kick-off, led by the CEO to on-board design working groups, share the 5 year strategy and operating model design process
  • Established a new function to support the longer term strategy and its implementation, coaching the new GM and program manager
  • Collaborated with business area leaders to co-create detailed implementation plans for each initiative (the what and why, key financials and roadmap) and communication plans to ensure buy-in to the strategy

Key Outcomes

  • In partnership with Metcash, we set out a robust 5-year strategy for growth and comprehensive approach and roadmap for how the strategy would be delivered. The main outcomes were:
  • Developed a roadmap to reverse the trend of declining sales and grow EBIT by 14% in five years
  • Determined areas to reduce $40m costs a year (for the next five years) to enable leaner operations
  • Identified capabilities and operating model required to realise the full potential of the plan
  • Designed the operating model, integrating convenience and supermarket teams and established two new functions
  • Redefined, compelling brand proposition that focuses on customers’ needs
  • Coached the SLT to lead a 6 week design process with guardrails and sign-offs
