Change management Data analysis Energy transition Scaling for growth

The Challenge

As part of Shell’s global enterprise-wide transformation to prepare for the energy transition and achieve its net-zero emissions ambition, a new organisation was created within Trading & Supply (T&S) called Data and Digital. Within this, the Data Foundations team was tasked with ensuring strong data governance and quality, managing data across its lifecycle, and maximising its value for T&S.

However, as a newly formed team, the structure, roadmap, and approach to implementing effective data governance, quality, and literacy were not yet established. Q5 was engaged to create the roadmap, frameworks, and tools to enable Data Foundations to deliver on its purpose.

Our Approach

Q5 worked closely with the Data Foundations team to operationalise and embed best practices tailored to Shell’s enterprise-wide objectives and T&S’s unique operating environment. Key steps included:

  • Developing and aligning frameworks and tools for data governance, quality, and value to support Shell’s overarching strategy.
  • Designing a comprehensive onboarding programme to equip new Data Foundations team members with the skills and knowledge to excel in their roles.
  • Establishing a Data Literacy Forum to improve understanding and engagement across T&S.
  • Conducting data cleansing activities and designing a scalable programme to maintain data integrity.
  • Creating an external-facing SharePoint site to communicate the Data Foundations team’s purpose and progress across the broader Shell organisation.

Key Outcomes

  • Operationalised team: The Data Foundations team is now fully set up and functional with tailored tools and frameworks.
  • Enhanced onboarding: New team members receive a structured onboarding experience, accelerating their ability to contribute.
  • Improved data literacy: The Data Literacy Forum fosters greater awareness and engagement with data governance and quality across T&S.
  • Optimised data management: Data cleansing initiatives have improved the integrity and usability of T&S data.
  • Clear communication: The SharePoint site ensures visibility of the team’s mission and achievements within Shell, strengthening alignment and support.
